Server Hosting problem
Server Hosting problem
I've looked around at other posts and it seems to be that no one has an answer...
This is a server problem once again. I can't set one up. I've talked with another guy in Britain with the exact problem that I have but neither of us could help each other out.
When comes down to creating a server, no one can see it. Alright, now I turn off all firewalls and port blocking utilities, open ports 11001 - 11004 and still nothing. Now, I attempt to use DMZ Hosting (a special service that comes in some routers meant for better gameplay online) but this still doesn't fix the problem, although now at least my server appears in the server list....unlike before.
So, basically I've done almost everything I can possibly think of to get a server running but nothing works. Anyone have an answer? Doesn't matter what you through out there, I'll take it into consideration and at least try it to see if it works.
This was no problem with Dial-up, but ever since the switch to DSL I cannot create servers for people to join.
I have internet service from USFamily.net, which in-turn gets their service from Qwest. I have one of those all-in-one modems that also has a built in 4 port router and wireless access.
I can also verify that my server is not being seen in the list because I have 2 desktop pc's running HD2 (one of which i'm trying to host the server on), then 2 other laptops also running the game, neither of which can create a server too.
Any advice?

Re: Server Hosting problem
Ports: 11001-11004+27900+28900 DMZ for your PC IP @ on
If that will still not work you could try to use hamachi to play at last with some friends

Re: Server Hosting problem
....nope, tried what you said here and it didn't work.
I set ports 11001 - 11004 to open with UDP on my IP
I did the same with ports 27900 - 28900
Then I even switched ports 27900 - 28900 to TCP to see if it might make a difference, no difference though.
In game I where you can select which port to use, I retried it six times with each port listed above....still nothing.
I set DMZ hosting to on, my IP...still nothing.
At most, my server is visible in the server list, but no one can connect.

Re: Server Hosting problem
Try with someone witch you gave your wan IP if he can connect when he enters it manualy
If the server is in the list some ports are corect opend. If you will not get any serverinfo from the server in the game the gamespy ports might not compete opened (27900+28900)

Re: Server Hosting problem
Alright, checked for the game info and none was retrieved. I opened ports 27900 - 28900 exactly how I opened ports 11001 - 11004. Do 27900 - 28900 need to be set to UDP or TCP ?
Re: Server Hosting problem
I always only used tcp

Re: Server Hosting problem
Lars, I noticed you said something about Gamespy.
Is it necessary to have the gamespy thing installed in order to host a server?
Just curious.

Re: Server Hosting problem
It never was before when I hosted servers on dial-up. I don't see why that would make a difference now. Although, I never knew that gamespy needed extra ports opened....
Edit: Ok, once again....I set the port 11001-11004 to TCP, same with ports 27900-28900 but still nothing....

Re: Server Hosting problem
The in gamebrowser uses parts of the gamespy technology. There´s no need to install gamespy arcarde or something else.
You can try the following, I guess you are useing atm an router. Most routers can be also accessed as an normal modem via ppoe from xp. Just install the connection settings in your xp network services and setup the login and password informations. After that also install the internetconnection sharing option. Than it should work too. But thats just an workaround if you don´t have an second pc witch will use the router.
Just some questions: Witch firewall did you use and is the dmz for your pc really turned on?

Re: Server Hosting problem
The only firewall I use is the Windows Firewall, and I have that turned off most of the time anyways. For the DMZ, I turned it on from within the web access area for the router and set it to my computer address (192.168.0.2)
Plus, I have also tried using another computer, not that it should make a difference what pc the server is on...but that didn't work either.

Re: Server Hosting problem
Alright, I never added the gamespy ports to windows firewall, mostly because I didn't know about them and I always have the firewall disabled. I'm not a big fan of my router for the most part. It is the "recommended" router by my ISP... I think I might have a better chance with a better brand such as Linksys, where I can control it a little more.
Re: Server Hosting problem
Even an disabled Firewall blocks parts from time to time... Had that with the damn Norton IS before
Re: Server Hosting problem
Ok, I'm getting pretty pissed off at this point.
I went ahead and enabled Windows Firewall, and added the gamespy ports as well as ports 11001-11004 but still nothing. I aslo added the game exe's but that didn't help.

Re: Server Hosting problem
Adam, maybe it's something with NOD32? Have you checked that???? IDK why it would matter, but it would probably be a good idea to check that.
