This one is fun. Not nearly as difficult as it looks, especially with that disguise from the previous mission. As far as that goes I've run it without the disguise a couple of times and it wasn't all that tough. But it's not so easy as to be boring either.
Wrecked train in a short tunnel. Plenty of Germans but not really organized for defense.
Capture the Nazi war criminal Freiberg, who is somewhere on board. It's not written out that you have to kill everybody else but that's how it works out. There's another officer on the train with some documents and you're supposed to pick them up too although I don't think that's an absolute requirement.
You're going to be picking up some MP-44s in this mission; three in fact, so all your men but the sniper can have them. But the ammo supply isn't good, and you've got a lot of fighting ahead of you in this campaign. So it's not a bad idea to have the lads shoulder those lovely MP-44s and do at least most of the work with their submachine guns, which after all are perfectly valid weapons and you might as well use up that ammo you brought.
You begin the mission, after an interesting cut scene, standing on a cliff above the entrance (or maybe the exit) of the tunnel. Down below a couple of Germans are doing something amid the wreckage of the train. Give the command Fire At Will and one of your men will eliminate them, even though there's no reason to believe either of them is named Will.
Move down along the top of the rock cut to your right and you'll see another one amid the wreckage. Get him too and move along until you're directly above that spot where the flatcar is jammed up against the rock. This is the only place you can climb down.
However, you don't want to climb all the way down yet. Just move part way down, moving sidewise and facing back toward the tunnel and watching for signs of life. Chances are there'll be at least one target in there somewhere.
When you do get all the way down, jump down off the flatcar toward the tunnel, staying way over on the left. There's a bunch of Germans in there, including one with a machine gun aimed at the tunnel mouth. Toss in a few grenades; that usually thins them out nicely.
Bring a couple more men down by the same route and let them help with any shooting that develops. Pretty soon, if you've been careful, there should be only one or two Germans left in the area just ahead. Number One man can now dump his backpack by the tracks where he can find it later, let his disguise fire up, and go in and mop up any survivors.
(I should explain that from here on out I am going to refer to your disguised man as #1, just for convenience. If he isn't number one in your team's lineup, just make the adjustment in your head as you read on.)
When you've eliminated resistance so that it's safe to walk around in or outside the tunnel mouth, somebody should go back along the tracks and pick his way through the wreckage and locate the two gift boxes lying behind that derailed flatcar. It takes some doing to find them but persevere, because one of them contains a nice shiny new MP-44 and the other is an ammo supply box.
There's another MP-44 in a box near that machine gun. Somebody take it, and sling it for now; you don't have enough ammo for the new toys yet.
#1 should take over the other MP-44 and its ammo, and give his MP-40 to the sniper, who needs something handier than that elephant rifle in these close quarters. I usually pick up a Luger off one of the stiffs too; it has its uses in a couple of upcoming situations.
Go on, as #1, and climb up into the first passenger car. There may or may not be a man inside. Keep going, into the second car, where you've got a better chance of meeting somebody. If it's just a lone man you can walk quickly up to him and kill him with the pistol, thus saving MP-44 ammo.
Whatever you do it with, don't forget to let your disguise recharge before moving on.
Somebody on the outside can go up alongside the second car and lie down and look through under the car; there are a couple of Germans on the other side and you can just see their booted feet and legs. Take careful aim and you can literally shoot their feet out from under them.
Inside the second car, #1 should hold still and watch the door for a moment. If nobody comes in he can go on through the door. There may be a German on the rear platform of the car ahead. If not, then look to the right, where there may be a German up against the wall of the tunnel. Either way, shoot quickly and get back into the car and watch the door again. There's a good chance you're about to have visitors.
Take your time, don't get in a hurry. There's a lot of action right around this point; you've got an opportunity to make a considerable dent in the enemy's ranks. When they stop coming through the door of the car, go out onto the platform and look around, especially to the right; make sure that area's clear.
In the third car there are two officers, one dead. Actually he may be the only one; the live one has a tendency to come looking for trouble and you may already have shot him. Anyway the dead one has those papers on him, but leave them for now; you don't have a pack and you don't have the space to spare.
Bring a backup man into the train and through the first couple of cars and out onto the platform at the end of the second car. Move him over where he can cover the area to the left of the train.
Now, as #1 again, go on through the third car to the end and open the door. Don't step through yet. Check for a German on the platform of the next car, or standing close beside it. Get him and step back and let your disguise recharge before you go any farther.
There's a man on the roof of the fourth car with an MP-44. Step through the door and shoot him and quickly get back under cover; sometimes he's got friends hanging around.
You can move on to the fourth car now. There's a single German inside and he's easy enough to get; I think the crash deranged him, he acts very strangely.
Your backup man can now go through the third car - pausing to pick up the documents off that dead officer - and climb up the ladder onto the roof of the fourth car and take over that MP-44 and the deceased's ammo supply, such as it is. This man should have a good supply of fragmentation grenades; if he doesn't have him go back and get some from the others before climbing up there.
Crawl him along the roof and across the connection to the fifth car and all the way to the end of that. If you look in third person you'll see at least one German by the tracks to the right. Drop a grenade on him. More Germans will show up; grenade them too.
You can do some really good work with grenades from this spot; don't be too quick to decide it's over, they keep coming with amazingly bad judgment. The trick is to give the grenade just a light underhand toss and let it drop right onto them.
When your bombardment is done, turn around and crawl back and come down the ladder (you might have needed to get rid of the grenades before you could pick up the MP-44 and its ammo). At this point somebody with an MP-44 should go through the train and over to that area to the right of the second car, where there's an ammo supply box. This is the last chance you get to pick up MP-44 ammo in this mission so take advantage. #1 might also take this opportunity to go back and get his backpack and bring it up to a more convenient location; just remember where you leave it.
There probably won't be anybody in the fifth car. That's the last passenger car; after that it's boxcars the rest of the way. #1 can go down the steps to the right and look for a German just inside the door of the second boxcar. Watch out, there's probably another one over by the right of the train.
Now bring up the whole team and deploy them in that area to the right of the boxcars. Have them lie down where they can see up under the train. Very likely some Germans will come down the tunnel on the other side right away. Shooting underneath the train is a very effective tactic; it seems to confuse the Germans, they shoot back but without much effect. You can really do some damage in this way. Try using the MP-44 to fire single aimed shots at feet and legs.
Now start moving your men up under the train. Yes, you can do that - this isn't HD - and it's the best way to attack the remaining Germans up the tunnel. You can sort of leapfrog them: move a couple of men into position, then a couple more ahead of them. You can't simply crawl forward because the axles are in the way; you have to creep out to the side of the car and up to the next one.
Just keep this up, moving under the cars, up along the train and finally over to the left side, shooting them down as they come out of the boxcars at you. The last few Germans are over on the right up near the head of the train and they'll come around the end at you as you move out to the left of the train.
When you've eliminated all resistance in the tunnel, go back and get your backpack and then go down along the last few boxcars till you come to one with a closed door that gives you a Use box. Open the door and there he is.
And there you are. Climb into the car and capture him and you're done.
