C5M1:
Tales From The Nazi Woods

Great mission. Just hard enough that you never get bored but not hard enough to be frustrating, especially once you know the secret. Fantastic scenery, too. Reminds you a little of the mountain scenery in the old HD, though more sophisticated of course.

Situation:

Somewhere in the mountains of Austria. Wooded, rocky terrain cut by fast-moving but shallow streams. Narrow winding road leading to small outpost.

Mission:

Reach the outpost, capture truck driver and take his uniform, papers, and vehicle. No requirement to kill everybody and usually no need to do so.

Special Notes:

Your man with the highest stealth rating needs to travel pretty light, because he's going to be dumping his pack early on. Give him a silenced Sten and a reasonable supply of ammo, a compass, and the big first aid kit - and a knife. Don't forget that last, it's very important even though he'll only be using it once.

Your sniper can carry both an Enfield and a De Lisle, since he won't need all that much ammo for either one. You can be pretty sure that no matter which one you put in his hands, he'll switch to the other one as soon as you're not controlling him; but that's just one of those game bugs that you have to live with.

Doing It:

When the mission opens you're all standing in the woods just off the road. Three Germans are walking up the road, hidden from you by the trees. Step forward through the trees till you can see them and gun them down with a long burst from the silenced Sten. The way they're bunched up you can get them all and it's less trouble and more dependable than trying to get the rest of the team into position to do it.

Bring everybody out onto the road and leave them there. Turn and run up the hill on the left of the road, toward that grove of trees. Get down as you near the top and crawl till you can almost, but not quite, see the clearing beyond - if your man goes too far, back him up. Go back and get another man and bring him up to join you, putting him a few meters off to one side and making sure he can't see into the clearing either. Bring up the third man in the same way and position the sniper so he can cover the road.

Now use the tactical map to assign your two partners to move forward just far enough to give them a view of the clearing. When you fold the map and they start to move, move with them and watch for bad guys right ahead.

In the clearing a bunch of slave laborers are cutting wood, watched by three German guards. The three of you can cut them down before they know what's happening, but be careful and don't hit any of the prisoners.

When you get up and move out into the clearing the poor bastards will cringe and crouch and if you get close they'll beg you not to shoot them. There's nothing you can do for them so move on past and think about what you're going to do to some of the people who did this to them.

Bring your backup men and move across the clearing, staying over to the left next to the cliff. Up ahead you'll see there's a kind of big rock formation, and a narrow passage between that and the mountain on your left. Deploy your trio to cover the passage; a German or two may come charging through.

Through the passage you'll see a broad lightly wooded area beyond the big rock formation, in the angle formed by the road and the cliffs. There are Germans wandering around out there and you'll have to stalk them carefully, or take them down when they attack you. There's no guarantee how many of them there may be; sometimes reinforcements come down the road.

You'll hear a dog barking. You may or may not encounter it; its handler moves around a good deal. Until it's been disposed of you'd better have your Sten men lead the way; a De Lisle carbine is not the ideal weapon against a charging dog.

Bring the sniper on up the road, over the hill and along the road a short way. Have him scope the road and the area on the right; he may be able to snipe one or two guards.

You may have quite a little battle cleaning out all those Germans from the woods on either side of the road. When you're done, don't go any farther along the road. YOu'll see that it disappears through a narrow pass between a couple of rocky cliffs, but don't go through there. You'll just run into a lot of opposition and it's easier to do a bypass.

Move everybody over to the right side of the road, down among the trees near the creek. Have one man pick up an MP-40 and ammo from one of the Germans you just killed.

The next bit is tricky but fun. Move your stealth man down to the stream and along it, staying up against the rocks to his left. Do this in third person, because you need to watch ahead.

Just around the bend, on the other side of the creek, there's a patroling German guard. He's up on top of that high wooded bank and you may not see him at first; he walks a patrol that takes him in and out of the woods. Wait and watch till you spot him, and then until he turns his back and moves away.

Then run across the stream and up it, staying down below the bank and keeping well under cover. Check frequently to see where the guard is and continue to work your way along beside the stream until you're up against the rocky bank below the place where he stops and turns around.

This guy is the friendly neighborhood surrender monkey. Not all that friendly, really, he'll shoot at you if he sees you; but if you shoot at him first, put a Sten burst close over his head from short range, he'll give up readily enough and assure you he's not a Nazi and thinks Hitler is tacky and do you have any English cigarettes? Capture him and take his uniform and now the rest of the mission gets a lot easier.

Bring up another man, the one carrying the MP-40, and swap the Sten for it. Load your belt with the ammo, make sure you've got the medical kit and the knife on your belt - for God's sake don't lose the knife - hand over the Sten clips, and dump your backpack.

The other men can do a little swapping and rearming at this point; one of the De Lisle men - not the sniper - can toss his clumsy carbine and take over the extra Sten. Keep an eye on the area across the creek; now and then some bad guys come down from the road through the trees.

(At some point you may see a halftrack up on the road. It's probably moved on already, but if you do see it just leave it alone. You can get extra credit for destroying it, but it's not worth the trouble. One time I saw something really bizarre: the halftrack had gone off the road and run into a tree and was hung up, roaring and smoking as it pushed uselessly against that tree. Finally I destroyed it with a grenade - it's not that tough - but it certainly was a strange thing to see.)

When everybody's ready to roll, take over the sniper, switch him back to the Enfield if necessary, and move east, through that low area between the cliff and the woods, till you reach a big gray boulder on your left. Stand up straight and look over the boulder, move around a little if necessary, and you'll see a sentry standing at a sandbagged machine gun nest up on top of a high cliff.

Pick him off and hunker back down. Bring up the other men and have them cover the area up ahead, to the east, on the other side of the creek; but don't move them past that boulder, or they'll be exposed to fire from the road.

Take the sniper on past the boulder, moving with caution and checking frequently through the scope for signs of life off to the north, where the road crosses the creek on a high bridge. There'll be a couple of Germans on the road, one manning a machine gun, the other probably just standing or walking around. Snipe carefully and accurately, because if you miss one the return fire can be pretty nasty.

When you're reasonably sure you've cleared the area of enemy, the disguised bloke can go on ahead, across the creek and up the bank and through the trees, to check, and to finish off anybody you missed.

Now you can bring everybody across the creek and gather in the area beside the road, on the south side, near that big boulder beside the cliff. Don't stray out into the road yet. There's a bit of shooting to be done.

Position your three submachine gun men side by side facing northwards, across the road and toward that patch of woods. There are three Germans who are going to come charging this way pretty soon; they're off map now so you can't go after them. Have your men in position to shoot them up; they could attack any time, because it's not clear what triggers them.

Take over your sniper again, now. If he's playing musical guns with you, make him drop the damn De Lisle for the moment, somewhere it can be easily recovered, thus forcing him to use the big rifle.

For now, though, control him yourself and walk cautiously out into the road until you see the man walking along the road up by the bend. Don't move out too far, there's a machine gun up there. Watch and wait until that guy shows up and then pick him off quickly. You may have to wait quite some time but be patient, it's necessary to get him.

Wait a moment to see if those guys show up over across the road. If not, move the sniper back to join the others, take over the disguise man again, go across the road, and move up alongside that rocky retaining wall, staying down out of sight. Keep going as you get to the end of the wall, and turn right and go up that slope toward the machine gun position. Since you're in disguise, it's not hard to run up close enough to get both men with a single burst.

By this time the Off The Map Gang should have been triggered. You can go back down the slope and help the boys by hitting the attackers from the flank, though they'll probably all be down by the time you get there.

Have your sniper toss the Enfield, and recover the De Lisle if he left it earlier. Now you can move everybody on up the road. (If you're light on MP-40 ammo, you can get some more from the dead attackers.) Just a little way, though; just around the bend past the machine gun, and up along the right side of the road toward where the road bends to the right again. Don't go any farther, and keep everybody up by the cliff. Three Germans are going to come walking along the road.

When they're dead, you've eliminated the last opposition along the road; the target area is right around the bend. You're also at the end of the area where you can engage in gunplay without blowing the mission; even though you're using silenced weapons, all it takes is one German getting off a single rifle or even pistol shot where it can be heard from the camp, and the mission fails.

So leave your men where they are, where they can't get in any trouble, and make sure your disguise is fully charged, and walk on down the road - and I did say walk, you're going to need to sprint in a moment and you'll need your wind - staying over to the left side of the road. You'll pass some boulders and the cliff will end, followed by a small patch of woods. You'll hear some gunfire but don't panic, they've got a pistol range at the camp (they drink beer till midnight and pistol two in the morning) and the boys are practicing with their Lugers.

At this point break into a run and sprint straight ahead, crossing the road at an angle, heading southeast, toward the base of that big gray cliff up ahead. If you move ass you'll be across the road and out of the guards' line of sight before your disguise fails, though it may dip a little on the way.

Once you're safely out of their line of sight, move on over to that dropoff, where the ground falls away vertically to a lower area. You'll see a sentry walking a patrol down there; or if you don't just wait till he shows up. He won't pay any attention to you.

Swap the MP-40 for the knife. Jump down off the dropoff- it's not far, you won't hurt yourself - and, ignoring everything your Mama told you about running with sharp objects, come up behind him and stab him. Remember you need to do this from behind, not in front or the side, or it may not work. He'll make an interesting gurgle as he goes down and you can get out the MP-40 again - toss the knife if you like, you won't need it any more - and then wait a moment while your disguise recharges.

Now run around through the woods, staying pretty well to the right so as not to give those guards up by the entrance too good a look at you, and head for that two-story building across the road. Sprint across the road and up by the right side of the building, out of sight.

You'll see a white box on the wall. Go up to it and hit Use, once. You'll hear a snicking sound; and now you've cut off the telephone connection between this place and the outside.

That's all you do for now. Get your wind back and run back across the road and through the trees and on around by the cliff, near where you knifed that sentry, out of sight. Time to bring in some help.

Go back to where you left the boys and bring them on down the road, past the cliffs, to that little patch of woods just before the entrance to the camp. You may want to use the tactical map for the next part, though you can do it just moving them by hand. Deploy them so they've got a clear shot at those two bastards sitting by the campfire and let them do their thing. (You may want to take charge of the sniper long enough to pop one of them, though.)

Back to your disguised man, now; run quickly through the woods toward that building again, and up to the door. If the lads finish off those sentries quickly without any noise, you're in good shape, but if there's any audible shooting the guy you're after will take off out the door and there goes the mission, so you need to get there just as fast as you can.

(If there's any audible gunfire before you get into the building, you'll get an amusing cut scene of some officer somewhere slamming down a phone in anger. Or else you'll get one of somebody talking on a phone in German, in which case you failed to shut off that switch and the mission is about to fail.)

You have to pick the lock on the front door; this is why you need those guards eliminated, or at least kept busy. You'll hear voices inside, speaking German (oddly enough). Open the door and charge down the hall; it's not necessary to wait for your disguise to recharge. There's a door on the right and through it you'll see a man behind a desk and you can shoot him before he has a chance to do anything.

Run into the room and capture the truck driver, but don't take the time to change clothes right now. A couple of nasty bastards are going to come down the road from the off-the-map west; and they may get involved shooting it out with your boys, or they may try to come in after you. So go out into the hallway and watch the door and shoot anybody who shows up in the doorway, or goes past it.

Once they've been whacked, all that remains is to finish off a couple of geeks up by the pistol range. Your men may already have gotten one or both of them.

Now go back in the office and change uniforms with the driver (the one you're wearing won't be accepted by the game; you have to have his, complete with spiffy little cap) and take his papers. (Be sure you get the documents; you can't run the next mission without them.) Leave the knife; you won't have any use for it. Leave yours, too, if you've still got it. Go out and load up on MP-40 ammo, if you've got any room left, from the nearest suitable stiff.

All that remains is to load everybody into the truck, with you at the wheel of course, and start up. As soon as you put the truck into forward motion it will go to a cut scene and you'll get mission completion.

Fun, wasn't it? Wait till you see the next one.
