Hi there --

I am at the beginning of the night battle of the oasis, and the doctor has offered his services to me. Aside from handing him one of my weapons with its ammunition, what other steps can I take to either control or assign him to a specific location and have him defend his position?

If you program him only with voicecommands, yes than you can do that

Use the tactical map to deploy him somewhere... If it isn't available, press 5 or 2 on your numpad, depending on your game setting (in lone wolf, he will be team mate number two) and ask him to follow and station him somewhere, remember to tell him to open fire. I remember having a problem with him aswell. I think he might be scripted not to leave the mosque, and will remain there. He is an efficient healer though and he will make the most of any available first aid kit.

Well he does have 96% First Aid.
