Trouble in Squad City!!!!

Am I doing something wrong? Am I a complete idiot when trying to control my squad?
I've had this game for a week now and I'm about to throw my computer out the windown when my SQUAD decides NOT to do what I tell them! Put simply, when I enter the 'Tactical Screen' and tell each squad member to do something specific..they do it flawlessly! After they are done performing all their actions, a little shield appears in the icon box. As long as that shield stays in that icon box, my squad members behave accordingly!
Now, when I take control of a squad member and move him into a specific position (i.e. in the prone position) and then switch to another character, MOST of the time that squad member (that I left in the prone position) will get a wild hair up his butt and decide to stand up and look around a bit....WTF??? Here the rest of the squad is creeping into hostile territory and Joe Shmuck on the machine gun decides his back hurts and wants to stand up for all God and the world to see!???
Is there anyway to place a "shield" icon in there box without having to enter the tactical map screen? If not, what the heck am I supposed to do to keep everyones "orders" and "position" LOCKED into the game!???
Any advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
