Best WWII Movies of All Time

Unread post by jacobston » Sun Jan 12, 2014 5:29 pm

I just began watching "Kelly's Heroes" for what is probably the 500th time, and I am wondering what other WWII movies are worth watching. So I decided to come here to ask: what do you think are the best WWII movies of all time?

The Eagle Has Landed (1976) must have seen it a thousand times and that one with Richard Burton in, Where Eagles Dare (1968) Reach for the Sky (1956) lol

I watched the first two of your list, and now I can see a lot of references in HD2. Obviously Adler Castle is similar to "Where Eagles Dare", but I noticed references in the team selection alone. In "The Eagle has Landed", one of the Americans is named Mallory, i.e. Fredrick Mallory in HD2.

There is also Harris and Saundby in HD2 - named for two officers in the RAF, Bennett - the Canadian Prime Minister in the early 30's.

My favourite has always been The Longest Day, so many great shots in that movie. Some lesser known (maybe?) movies are The Desert Rats and The Desert Fox, The Bridge at Remagen is rather good as well.

It's been ages since I have seen the longest day, I'll have to watch that again one of these days. I haven't seen any of the others you mentioned, but they seem promising so I'll look them up.

One that I'm kind of interested about seeing is "the Monuments Men", when it hits theaters.

Ah yes, I heard about that one recently. The story does sound interesting indeed.

They really need to make more spy/secret operations related movies set in WW2 but it seems the US and UK can't be bothered making any WW2 movies these days

It's not the trend. Movie companies these days make films about what's popular. This is reflected by the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; no companies wanted to make the movie because they didn't feel that a sci-fi/comedy would draw in viewers. It wasn't until Men in Black was so successful that production finally began for the Hitchhiker's movie (although, I prefer the TV series anyway). There always will be WWII movies, but for the time being the attention is beginning to move away from them.

I managed to find and started watching The Desert Rats". Its pretty good, I've watched about the first 45 minutes of it. Is it fairly accurate?

Try the following:

Tora, Tora, Tora
Operation Crossbow
The Dam Busters
Battle of The River Plate
Hope and Glory
Heroes of Telemark
The Man Who Never Was
Bridge on The River Kwai
In Which We Serve
The Cruel Sea
The Guns of Navarone
Das Boot
The Enemy Below

That should keep you occupied for a while.

Yeah, little while, anyway.

Nice movie trailer. I have made a few stop-motion Lego movies in the past, but I think my next project is going to be "Hidden & Dangerous Lego"

If you do that right... my son will love it.
Eight, 8, the burning eight; between Sunday and Monday exists a day so great, it will devastate.

It is definitely going to be something I take my time on. Most of my previous videos I literally threw together in 1-2 nights, some even less... I believe there is a link to my YouTube page under my avatar if you want to see them - keeping in mind that they were thrown together in 1-2 nights.
