Running classic H & D on an XP system

I have just returned to H & D after some years layoff. My system is XP, 1.9 AMD Athlon, 1G ram GeForce 7300. I have installed but the game is, how shall i describe it, clunky, the sound is awful, music keeps breaking up and speech, the briefings, one gets about one in five words. You can go into the game but the graphics do strange things, soldiers floating horizontally etc etc.

I have tried running in both 95 and 98 compatability mode but the game will not start at all then.

Has anyone any ideas or am I wasting my time and should go out and buy a more up to date version?

Your advice would be appreciated

H&D1 does work on XP all you need is the 1.3 patch and it works. I have had it working on all my XP installs. I am yet to test it on my new laptop which has Vista on it.

Tried to launch it on Vista -> first 2 or 3 launches it just crashes at startup, then it works for some time and simply hangs.
Patch 1.3, Vista 32bit, H&D Classic, NVidia 9650m GT 1 GB, 4 GB Ram
