it's possible that your notebook is causing service interruptions. I tend to use the simplest setup possible, making my router act as a gateway/firewall/proxy/dhcp. This configuration by design allows to connect/disconnect other nodes on your LAN without affecting your connection.

Dice, You must be using Internet sharing option and your notebook acts as a gateway. To eliminate your laptop out of equation make sure that your broadband router/modem is setup with DHCP.
