Go to \Program Files\Illusion Softworks\Hidden & Dangerous 2
and click the setup.exe. Choose "autodetect", then "save and exit".
The game plays for me now.

So, I found a workaround.

I seem to be getting the same issue, all of a sudden. I was happily playing H+D a few months ago, but now all I get is the LS3D window pop up for a second and then disappear. Then...nothing. I recently installed Service Pack 3 because Microsoft insisted that it was on my PC before I installed Office...
